Approximately one year ago a pioneering movement began in Chicago in a traditional grass-roots style. Founded by professional educator who comes from a long line of family servicing communities in the academic field, Carla Tantillo.

Teaching in Texas at under resourced Chicano-American schools, returning to teach high school in the Chicago suburbs in 2003 before she settled with a developing high school for Chicano-Americans in 2004-2005. When her work had finished there she ventured toward the south side to improve educational conditions for mixed African-American and Chicano-American youth in 2006-2007.  It was here that the grass roots movement, known now as Mindful Practices, planted its seed.

During this time Carla honed her skills as a yoga instructor taking up a residency in the Teacher Training and Certification Program and Temple of Kriya Yoga.  For over three decades the Temple of Kriya Yoga has been a leader in providing high-quality, in-depth training for those who aspire to teach yoga. The Temple of Kriya Yoga is a registered school with Yoga Alliance, a national registry for yoga teachers.

Since then Mindful Practices has grown, developing programs that both ignite the spirit of inner city youth and at the same time gives them the tools to strengthen their academic integrity by becoming mentors for others through teaching. Mindful Practices now operates at 25 sites throughout Chicago-land.

Courses such as Hip-HopYogaŠ, graffiti art yoga, special needs yoga, fresh start yoga for homeless youth, our successful YCWC for elementary schools and a plethora of other diverse programs have continuously pushed the envelope on how to achieve health and wellness in schools.  Carla has taught at Oak Park Yoga for the past year teaching both Hatha and Vinyasa styles.

Recently she has added a Friday class for Vinyasa. Carla pulls strength from her ability to connect energetically with her students, challenging and infusing them with a delicate yet sincere sense of determination. Her capabilities as a nurturing and ambitious soul continues to reach bring her classes to new levels of satisfaction.
