Julia has been studying and practicing yoga
and meditation for more than thirty years. She has studied with many
teachers, exploring and integrating a number of different approaches
to personal growth and spiritual deepening. Julia has been teaching
yoga and meditation for 15 years.
In 1993, Julia completed her Hatha Yoga
Teacher Training certification at the Temple of Kriya Yoga. She was
ordained by Goswami Kriyananda after graduating from the Temple’s
seminary program in 1994. Julia’s hatha influences include Kim
Schwartz, Gary Kraftsow, and Roger Eischens. Today, Julia continues
her hatha studies with Kari Tomashik. In addition, she is studying
to receive certification in Bill Hubert’s Balance-Auditory-Vision
Exercise method—a system of rhythmic exercises designed to increase
cognitive integration in order to improve academic performance.
In Julia’s hatha classes, traditional asanas,
breath, and mindfulness are woven together with instruction on
posture and the mechanics of safe movement. Asanas are taught with
careful attention to alignment while guidance for accessing,
balancing, and controlling the flow of prana is provided. In
addition to stretching, the pelvic floor, abdominals, legs, and
upper body are strengthened to develop stability and vigor both on
and off the mat. Compassion and self-acceptance are encouraged in a
non-competitive atmosphere.
